Über den Autor
Alfonso Albacete (Antequera, Málaga, Spain, 1950) is a Spanish painter, printmaker, and artist. Trained as an architect, he has exhibited his pictorial work since 1978. His first solo exhibitions took place in the early 1970s in cities such as Murcia, Madrid, Seville, and Valencia. He attended the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Valencia and continued his studies at the School of Architecture in Madrid.

In 1977, after completing his degree, he fully returned to painting, and in 1979 he held a solo exhibition at the Egam Gallery in Madrid that brought him wider recognition. Albacete belongs to the generation of the late 1970s alongside artists such as Campano, Quejido, Pérez Villalta, Pérez Mínguez, Alcolea, Franco, Gordillo, Cobo, and Molero.

This generation moved away from earlier conceptual practices to return to painting, informed by historical avant-garde movements and recent abstraction. Albacete’s work moves between figuration and abstraction and has been strongly influenced by American Abstract Expressionism and artists such as Jasper Johns, Richard Diebenkorn, and Helen Frankenthaler.

The rich chromatic range and strong structural organization of his compositions, often featuring luminous figures and spaces, give his work a distinctive character. His painting focuses on a vibrant and open chromatic language influenced by American abstraction and pop art, situating his work at the intersection between figuration and abstraction.

Since the early 1990s, his work has developed a consistent iconography including the human figure, still life, and landscape, while remaining open to more abstract approaches. His work has been exhibited at Galería Marlborough in Madrid, among other venues.

Notable exhibitions include “Pinturas analógicas” (2020), “Destiempo” (2017), and “Piezas cortas” (2019), as well as “Vanitas (Calendario MAXAM 2019)” at the Lázaro Galdiano Museum and “Asuntos Internos” at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo in Seville (2014). He was a member of the board of the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid between 1991 and 2003 and has been a member of VEGAP’s board since 1995. He has received awards such as “Featured Artist” at the Gentleman Awards (2021) and the Observatorio D’Achtall Prize for Visual Arts (2013).

His work is characterized by a striking chromatic intensity rooted in American Abstract Expressionism, as well as by a structural sensibility derived from his architectural training. Recurring themes in his work include studios, interiors, and landscapes.
