José María Yturralde, born in 1942, is a prominent Spanish artist known for his work in abstract painting and geometric art.

He began his artistic training at the School of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia, where he later also taught. His career took off in the 1960s when he joined the group Antes del Arte, a collective that sought to explore new forms of visual perception through experimentation with geometry and color.

Yturralde is recognized for his research at the intersection of art and science, integrating mathematical and physical concepts into his work. In the 1970s, he received a scholarship from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which allowed him to deepen his interest in technology and computer-based art. This period was crucial for the development of his “Transformable Structures,” a series of works exploring the relationship between space, movement, and perception.

His participation in international exhibitions has earned him numerous awards and recognitions for his contribution to contemporary art. He has exhibited at major institutions such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern (IVAM), where his work is part of permanent collections.

Throughout his career, Yturralde has continued to innovate, using new technologies and materials to expand the boundaries of artistic expression. He has also maintained a strong commitment to teaching, inspiring new generations of artists through his work at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. His work stands out for its ability to combine scientific rigor with artistic sensitivity, creating pieces that invite deep reflection on perception and aesthetic experience.
