Luis Claramunt was the son of pianist Petri Palou, who taught, among others, Tete Montoliu. A self-taught artist, Claramunt belonged to a generation that sought to be of its time without fully belonging to it.

His beginnings in the 1970s coincided with the rise of politically engaged art embraced by many of his contemporaries, in a Barcelona rich in experimental artistic, literary, and cinematic initiatives, as well as popular subcultures.

During these years, Claramunt went against the current and, rather than aligning himself with avant-garde movements, focused on painting itself. The finishes typical of naturalist painting, and particularly the work of Isidre Nonell, formed the first step in the path Claramunt would develop throughout his life. The themes and style of his painting evolved as he physically and socially distanced himself from Barcelona.
