A PAIR OF MONUMENTAL ICONS SHOWING THE MOTHER OF GOD PANAGIA PORTATISSA AND CHRIST PANTOKRATOR FROM A CHURCH ICONOSTASIS Griechenland, 2. Hälfte 17. Jh. Greek, 2nd half 17th century Paar massive und schwere Hartholz-Einzelbretter. Kowtscheg, Eitemperamalerei auf Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. One of the most popular images of the Mother of God, Christ seated in a contrapostal manner on his mother's left forearm, extending his hand in blessing and holding a closed scroll, the Mother with a pained expression on her face, directing the viewer's gaze towards her son, rendered in the traditional Byzantine style with strong colours, the image brightened by her light blue headcover visible from under her maphorion, her drapery rendered with gradated shades, Christ's garments with gold striations, the background gilded with a red border. Christ Pantokrator also painted on a gold ground, the Saviour shown half-length vested in blue and red garments, holding an open Gospel book in his left hand and making the blessing sign with his right hand. Losses, restored. 74.5 x 50 cm.
